PE and Sport Premium

Importance of the PE & Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium plays a vital role in improving the quality of physical education, physical activity and sport in our primary school. It helps ensure that all pupils develop the skills, confidence and enjoyment needed to lead healthy, active lives.

Through effective use of the Sport Premium, schools can:

  • Increase participation in physical activity, helping all children to be active for at least 60 minutes a day

  • Improve the quality of PE teaching by providing specialist coaching and professional development for staff

  • Promote physical and mental wellbeing, supporting pupils’ confidence, resilience and social skills

  • Encourage healthy lifestyles and positive attitudes towards fitness from an early age

  • Broaden sporting opportunities, allowing pupils to experience a wide range of sports and activities

  • Develop competitive sport, including intra- and inter-school competitions

  • Ensure inclusion, giving all pupils—regardless of ability or background—access to high-quality PE and sport

The long-term aim of the Sport Premium is to create a sustainable improvement in PE and sport, ensuring that the benefits continue well beyond primary school and into later life.

How the PE & Sport Premium Is Allocated

The PE and Sport Premium is allocated to schools by the government to improve the quality and provision of physical education and sport for all pupils.

Funding is allocated as follows:

  • All eligible primary schools receive a £16,000 base funding

  • An additional £10 per pupil is provided based on the number of pupils in Years 1 to 6

The total amount a school receives depends on the number of eligible pupils recorded in the January census.

Schools are required to use the funding to make sustainable improvements to PE and sport provision, ensuring that the impact benefits current pupils and future cohorts.

The funding must be used to:

  • Develop or add to the PE and sport activities offered

  • Build staff confidence and skills to deliver high-quality PE

  • Increase participation in physical activity and competitive sport

  • Improve pupils’ health, fitness and wellbeing

Schools are also required to publish:

  • The amount of Sport Premium funding received

  • How the funding is spent

  • The impact of the funding on pupils’ participation and outcomes

This information is reviewed annually and updated on the school website in line with government guidance.
