Reading Ambassador Meeting

We look forward to reading the new books once they arrive.

Trip to Liverpool

Date: 21st Feb 2023 @ 4:27pm

Today, Year 4 got on a coach and travelled to Liverpool.

During our morning session, the children were taught all about how the River Mersey was used by people and how it enabled Liverpool to grow into such a massive city. We discussed how goods were transported by sailing ships and eventually huge cargo ships, and also discussed what types of cargo used to come in and out of the city using the river. We found that all sorts of goods were brought into the city from exotic animals like parrots and monkeys to china plates, tea and wool.

After a quick 30 minutes for lunch, we marched across Liverpool to the World Museum. Here, we looked into one of our upcoming topics... The Egyptians. Our guide talked about how Egyptians mummified each other after they'd died. We even performed a mummification ceremony! (It wasn't for the faint-hearted!) As we were doing this, our guide explained about the importance of different Egyptian gods and Egyptian hierarchy within the process.

As a staff, we were all extremely proud of the behaviour of year 4 and the manner in which they conducted themselves around the museums and through Liverpool itself. The children had an excellent time and seemed to enjoy the gory details of mummification in particularly!

Reading Ambassador Meeting

Date: 18th Jan 2023 @ 10:55am

In our reading ambassador meeting today we made plans for National Storytelling Week which will be held on the week beginning Monday 30th January. The children shared why stories and storytelling is important.  They came up with ideas of events that we could do to promote a love of reading and storytelling.  The ambassadors are planning to hold a whole school assembly, will be visiting classes to tell stories and they will even be telling stories on the playground at playtimes!

Timestable Chatter Boxes

Date: 12th Dec 2022 @ 8:43am

Timestable Chatter Boxes

During year 4, the children must learn all of their timestables from the ones to the twelves. We are always thinking of creative ways to do this from board games, whole class games, bingo, songs, rhymes and now, we have decided to make timestable chatterboxes. The children followed the instructions that were given to them very carefully and created some lovely chatterboxes. After this, each child listed down the eight multiplication facts that they struggle with most and wrote them on. Now, all that was left was to play and practise!

Electrical Circuits

Date: 30th Nov 2022 @ 9:21am

Electrical Circuits

Today, Y4 have been investigating to see whether materials are a conductor or an insulator. We used knowledge that we have been taught from previous lessons about complete and incomplete circuits to create a suitable investigation.

Children discovered that if they made a complete circuit and checked the lightbulb worked that would prove that the electricity was able to flow around the circuit. They decided that they would need to create a gap and then put different materials in the gap to see if they would allow electricity to pass through them.

The children made predictions first of all as to which materials would be conductors and which would be insulators, Then, they tested them! They absoloutley loved testing the materials and seeing whether the light bulbs lit up or not!

Viking Gary Year 4

Date: 15th Nov 2022 @ 3:34pm

Viking Gary

Today, the children were amazed to discover that they had a visit from a real-life Viking!

Viking Gary had set out a display of all his Viking artefacts and collectables. During the morning session, we learnt about how Vikings lived, where they came from and why they travelled to England, what they believed in, how they made many of their tools and how they fought!

After lunchtime, the children had four different tasks to do! The first one was to study the ancient artefacts and answer questions about them. The second activity was to create a Viking oil lamp out of clay. The third, we created and played a Viking board game and lastly, we learnt how to fight like a Viking! (As you can see from our pictures!)

Tongan Player Visit

Date: 11th Oct 2022 @ 4:37pm

Tongan Rugby Team Visit

Some of our students had the fantastic oppurtunity today to meet some professional Tongan rugby league players. These players will be representing Tonga in the rugby league world cup. Their first match is on Tuesday 18th October so we are very lucky that they have taken time out of their busy schedule to come and visit us.

The children were very excited and got to ask the players lots of questions. At the end of the session, the players signed posters for the children and got photographs taken with them!

We'd like to thank the players once again. The children loved it!

Timetable Battleships!

Date: 28th Sep 2022 @ 8:53am

Timetable Battleships!!!

In year 4, we focus a lot throughout the year on timetables as at the end of this year we need to know all of them from 1x1 to 12x12. We're always looking at different and fun ways of learning and practising them.

The children had a great time playing battleships and have asked to play it again soon!

Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Chocolate tasting!

Date: 9th Sep 2022 @ 4:09pm

Chocolate Tasting!

Today, Year 4 created their own chocolate bars! We decided the best way to do this was to research how our favourite chocolate bars tasted. After every kind of chocolate bar, we discussed how they tasted and how they felt in our mouths... did they melt? pop? crunch? etc. We collected all of the describing words on the board to use later!

After this, we looked at the wrappers for our favourite chocolate bars and discussed how they were designed and what they have in common. We then designed our own chocolate bars using some our describing words and what we had learnt from our research.

The children seemed to enjoy the lesson!

Summer Fair

Date: 27th Jun 2022 @ 9:36am

Y4 STARBOOKS

Date: 22nd Jun 2022 @ 4:59pm

At Starbooks this afternoon Year 4 enjoyed talking about the pictures in the wordless story 'FLOTSAM' by David Wiesner.  Flotsam is a book about a young boy who stumbles across a barnacle-encrusted underwater camera as he is collecting flotsam that has been washed ashore.

We looked at the pictures to music and discussed what was happening in them.  Using a page of the story as inspiration of our artwork we created fish collages using recycled materials.  We use plastic bags, bottle tops and cotton buds - things that sometimes end up in our seas and oceans.
