Moving pictures: Aliens Love Underpants!

Date: 11th Dec 2020 @ 4:11pm

This half term we listened to the story 'Aliens Love Underpants', we looked carefully at how the illustrator had drawn each alien. Then we looked at some different books that contained levers and sliders. We learned how to make our own slider - by creating a slit - and levers - by using a split pin as a pivot. We designed our own moving alien picture - thinking carefully which materials we would use and writing them in a list. Using the skills we had been taught about sliders and levers, we made our designs thinking about how to make parts of our picture move. Finally we evaluated our finished products - saying what we liked about them and what we would improve; then we gave some feedback to a friend about theirs.

Why do Christians have advent calendars?

Date: 11th Dec 2020 @ 4:04pm

Today we retold the story of the first Christmas to check that we remembered it from last week! We used puppets to help us.

Then we talked about why Christians use advent calendars to count down to Christmas Day – to celebrate Jesus’ birthday.

We made our own advent calendar by drawing pictures from the nativity story and things that people do to celebrate Christmas. We used our phonics and finger spaces to write a sentence with our picture and wrote a number between 1 and 24 on the front.

At the end of the day we ordered the numbers and said that people would be getting more excited the nearer to the 24th it gets!

Human Rights Day 2020

Date: 10th Dec 2020 @ 4:20pm

Today is Human Rights Day. Every class in the school have had an assembly to talk about celebrating this day as the day the declaration was agreed. In Year 1, we talked about the difference between wants and needs and decided which picture card to put in each group. Then we talked about the things we need being rights - we already know that children have rights and now we know that adults to do.

The Nativity Story

Date: 7th Dec 2020 @ 8:51am

Today we have talked about why Christians celebrate Christmas. We listened to the story of the first Christmas and used actions to help us. Then we acted it out using puppets.

In small groups we cut out pictures from the story, put them in order and then told Mrs. Roberts what happened at the beginning, the middle and the end.

We showed that we remembered it by retelling it to Nursery in the afternoon. Then we listened to another story – Jesus’ Christmas Party.

We know that Christians celebrate Christmas because it was when Jesus was born.

Christmas in Foundation Stage

Date: 4th Dec 2020 @ 10:51am

Christmas has arrived. We have turned our summer house into Santa’s Grotto. The children can’t wait to be Santa’s helpers on Monday. Here are some of our other Christmas activities so far.

We are computer programmers!

Date: 27th Nov 2020 @ 4:13pm

We have had a great time learning about writing computer programs for the BeeBots! We used directional language to describe where we wanted the BeeBot to move to: forwards, backwards, turn left and turn right.  After that we had a go at predicting where it would move to following instructions we had been given. We know that a set of instructions for a computer is called an algorithm and that we must give each instruction clearly. If there is a problem with the instruction we must de-bug the program!

What happens at Eid al-Fitr?

Date: 27th Nov 2020 @ 4:05pm

Today we shared our knowledge about Ramadan from last week – we had remembered a lot! We talked about the end of Ramadan being called Eid al-Fitr (the festival of the breaking of the fast). Then watched a video of a family celebrating Eid: they wear special clothes, visit the Mosque, read the Qu’ran, say prayers, have food with family and friends and share gifts.

At snack time we tried dates and fig rolls – these are foods which Muslims eat at the end of Ramadan to mark the end of fasting. We talked about how this might feel.

We all made star and moon decorations and wrote down what our good deed would be.

ECO TEAM IN ACTION!

Date: 27th Nov 2020 @ 4:00pm

A HUGE thank you to our Eco Team who have met after school for the past three weeks to dig over the new planters, get rid of the weeds, clear leaves and pick up litter.

We are looking forward to the Spring when the crocus bulbs we have planted for The Rotary Club competition begin to bloom along with the daffodils, tulips and wild flowers we have planted.

Next week is National Tree Week - we are awaiting delivery of some fruit trees and hedgerows from The Tree Council. Our Eco Team will be leading an assembly in their classes to tell everyone all about it.

Mrs. Cribb will also talking about climate change in our other assemblies next week - about the importance of unity and working together to reduce our carbon foot print.

PATHs in Year 1 - Doing Turtle

Date: 25th Nov 2020 @ 5:12pm

In our last few PATHs lessons we have been learning all about 'doing turtle'.  Twiggle and his friends have helped us to understand that 'doing turtle' helps you to calm - when you are feeling mad or angry.   You have to:-

* Stop
* Count to 10
* Take a Deep Breath
* Say: The Problem Is ...
* Say: I am feeling ...

'Doing Turtle' can help you a lot.

In our provision area we have acted out when Twiggle was upset with Henrietta and some of us have completed a jigsaw all about 'Doing Turtle'.

Why do Muslims celebrate Ramadan?

Date: 20th Nov 2020 @ 4:24pm

Today we have talked about another festival - Ramadan. We found out that Muslims do special things during this time: they fast (do not eat) in daylight hours, they pray 5 times a day and they do good deeds. We listened to a story about Rameena who opened her Ramadan calendar – the message said she should do something to help someone else. She helped her neighbour to tidy the garden, washed the dishes at the community centre and shared food with a friend.

Muslims decorate their homes at this time – we made lanterns and decorated them.

We know that at the end of Ramadan, Muslims celebrate another festival – Eid.

FS Maths-Number 8

Date: 20th Nov 2020 @ 2:29pm

We found out all about the number 8.  We counted lots of objects to 8, we made spiders with 8 legs, 8 spots and 8 eyes.  We used Numicon to explore different ways to make 8.  We found out that an 8 sided shape is called an octagon and we made our own octagons using lolly sticks.

Happy Diwali from FS!

Today we have decorated our Diya lamps to make them sparkle for Diwali – it is called the festival of light. We will try and remember to turn our candles on tomorrow (Saturday 14th November) and think about people who will be celebrating.

We used the FANTASTICS to describe sights, sounds, feelings and what people might be saying at this time.

The Romans

Date: 13th Nov 2020 @ 9:37am

Diwali in FS

Date: 6th Nov 2020 @ 3:20pm

Today thought about the story of Rama and Sita and why Hindus celebrate Diwali – we had remembered it all from before the holidays!

We watched a video about a Hindu family and what they do in their house at Diwali. We found out that they wear new clothes, give presents and invite family and friends around for a special meal. Hindus also decorate their homes with lights and Rangoli patterns. They might have fireworks displays because it is called ‘the festival of light’.

Using clay, we made Diya lamps – we talked about how the clay felt and how to use our hands and fingers to mould the clay, then we used a tool to make patterns.

Then we made Rangoli patterns using chalk. We thought about the number 6: we drew 6 petals on the flower and used 6 colours to decorate it.

Sliders and Levers

Date: 6th Nov 2020 @ 12:07pm

In Y1, we will be making moving pictures as our first Design Technology project. We have looked at lots of children's books which contain levers, sliders and flaps. Then we had a go at making our own sliders and levers - using as split pin as a pivot.
